Considerable qualitative variability in local-level biodiversity surveys in Finland: A challenge for biodiversity offsetting

چکیده
High-quality biodiversity monitoring is crucial in the era of rapid global loss and for evaluation conservation outcomes at different spatial scales. Biodiversity offsets are actions that aim to an outcome no net by compensating negative impacts from development projects. Successful use requires gains losses between offset areas adequately comparably measured. Numerous local-level surveys conducted estimate values potential Finland every year. These done local planning purposes, their results almost never published. We studied Finnish assess adequacy with regards offsetting. Our data included all (n = 206) documented region Southwest during time period 1997–2014. analysed based on nature legislation related criteria gathered other programs. found be inadequate assessment considerations purposes. used cluster analysis study differences inventoried were clustered into 3 groups. The characteristics also varied individual surveyors. show current execution not compatible enough quality needed offsets. Surveys must standardized ensure comparability sufficient measurement ecologically geographically important features.

Taming a Wicked Problem: Resolving Controversies in Biodiversity Offsetting
The rising popularity of biodiversity offsetting as a tool for balancing biodiversity losses from development with equivalent gains elsewhere has sparked debate on many fronts. The fundamental questions are the following: Is offsetting good, bad, or at least better than the status quo for biodiversity conservation outcomes, and what do we need to know to decide? We present a concise synthesis o...
متن کاملUrban expansion as a driver of biodiversity loss: Integrating biodiversity in urban planning in African context
Africa has high biodiversity and is rapidly urbanizing. However, there is limited understanding of how urban expansion in Africa is likely to affect its habitats and biodiversity. Little urban ecological research has been done in Africa. This study needs to think ahead as Africa move into the “urban age” it is critical to inform the public on the importance of urban environment...
متن کاملBiodiversity conservation in local planning.
Local land-use policy is increasingly being recognized as fundamental to biodiversity conservation in the United States. Many planners and conservation scientists have called for broader use of planning and regulatory tools to support the conservation of biodiversity at local scales. Yet little is known about the pervasiveness of these practices. We conducted an on-line survey of county, munici...
